Tips to Keep You Venturing Outdoors

Appreciate Your Surroundings

While hiking or walking, look for birds that are native to your area. You can buy a bird watching guide or—for a more interactive experience—join your local club of ornithology enthusiasts.
Write your favorite outdoor place or memory onto a piece of paper and tape it to your TV, computer, or video game. This acts as constant reminder of the fun you could be having outside instead of staying indoors.
Plan a workout at a local park or other outdoor venue.
Take a run on the beach, around the lake, or alongside the river.

Mix Up Your Workday

Instead of weekly status meetings with your manager in a conference room, sit or take a walk outside as you discuss ideas.

Spend Quality Family Time

Plan a family campout—even if it’s in your own backyard! Sleeping under the stars or in a cozy tent is fun for all ages, and easy to do.
Make a pact with your family to be out of the house and at the park, beach, or gym no later than 10:00 A.M. on weekends.
Have a campout on the beach with family or friends.
Play games with your kids like “Monkey Bar” Olympics, tree climb warriors, and good old hide-and-seek.
Becoming a scout leader is a great way to stay motivated and accountable to being outdoors, while providing a wonderful opportunity to share your passion with others.

Make It An Every Day Occasion

Carry a blanket in your car and have an impromptu picnic anywhere.
Invite friends to go on a long walk or casual hike instead of meeting for happy hour or dinner.
Send your friends an electronic invitation for a hiking appointment.
Spend a few quiet minutes outside each day; look around you and listen to the sounds of nature

Create New Habits

Buy a few “outdoor-only” books, and allow yourself to read them only when you’re at the beach or a park.
At the beginning of the year, or each month, choose new destinations for climbing or hiking that you’ve never been before. Put them on your calendar and make it a goal to get to them all.
Place your bike on top of your car the night before you have plans to go for a weekend ride.
